JURI ARISUGAWA:
Profile
INTRODUCTION
Her name is Arigsugawa Juri. Student at the reputable Ohtori Academy. Not just any student, a member of the exclusive best-and-brightest Student Council; those in search of the key that will revolutionize the world.
Respected by students. Admired by peers. Feared by teachers.
She is lovely, well-dressed, classy and elegant. The captain of the fencing team, with unflappable skills and confedance, who makes even girls swoon after her commanding presence.
Not one to be loud and arrogant over her skills, but rather is quiet and reserved.
Such is the residue of a sorrowful person.
For Juri, the sausage-curled true acheiver, wants something she knows she can never have.
To put it blatantly, she is a chick in love with a straight chick. To say that she is lesbian would be jumping too far to conclusions; I believe Juri just loves who she want to, and this person happens to be a femme.
A total femme-fatale!!
*Spoilers!*
"If a chick dies in its egg, it will die withou being born. We are the chick. The world is our shell.
Smash the world's shell!"
Such is a statement made by Student Council president Kiryuu Touga. It illustrates on a small scale what the Student Council of Ohtori Academy is searching for...
The world has not truly been born, and it is up to the members of Ohtori Student Council to bring upon the revolution.
Juri is treasurer of the Council and captain of the fencing team.
The story revolves around sets of sword duels against Utena, each with a name. The first duel with Juri is titled "Amour" or "Love."
The reason for this is because Juri's story is mainly about her tragic love liaison.
A while back, Shiori fancied this boy who in turn fancied Juri. Shiori thought that Juri also loved this boy, but Shiori told the boy that Juri loved someone else (which was actually true) and then ran off with the guy.
Because of this, Shiori always thought Juri's indifference towards her was because she stole Juri's guy. "I don't regret my actions..." Shiori tells Juri in a letter.
In actuality, it was the face of Shiori that was held inside the rosebud locket Juri treasured so deeply.
Shiori was the one who taught Juri to believe in miracles. But it would take a miracle for Shiori to return Juri's feelings, which is why Juri is bitter towards the mentioning of miracles.
* Black Rose Deuls *
Shiori eventually finds Juri's locket after Juri discards it in an effort to get over her, and Shiori is driven mad and seeks out the Black Rose and becomes one of their duellists.
"I hate her. All my life I have lived in the cold shadow of the bright, shining, brilliant Juri..." Shiori tells the Black Rose Society.
"But she was the one who was suffering! Poor Juri, sitting in the dark, staring at me from her locket! ...NO! Don't think of me that way!!"
Shiori then recieves a Black Rose Signet and is brainwashed. She goes and seduces Juri and then procedes to take a duelist sword from Juri's chest for which to battle Utena with.
* Akio Arc *
Even after this trial, which Shiori doesn't recall after she is un-brainwashed, and even after Shiori falls in love with and is abused by Ruka, Juri remains to be her loyal yet distant friend.
Ruka was away form the Academy because of a sickness. He was the former captain of the Fencing Team and tought Juri what she knows.
Much to our heroine's surprise, Ruka returns, and begins to abuse the heart of Shiori, who falls for the dashing blue haired captain. Afterwards he claims it was just to mess with Juri, whom he loved in actuality.
He then shows her "The Ends of the World", and pretty much brainwashes Juri to challenge Utena.
One of the best scenes in the series is when Utena and Juri and dueling for the final time, and Utena, who has never actually defeated Juri with her skills, aims her sword at Juri's rose to knock it off and win the duel but instead tears off Juri's locket and it falls to the ground and shatters.
Juri, with a blank, torn expression, stumbles foreward and slowly rips off her own rose and drops it.
"Juri, it'll be alright.." Ruka tells her in an attempt to console her, but Juri's silence only saddens Ruka, which is the point in the story where we can really see that Ruka loves Juri.
A reference to a past even it made, when Juri challenges Ruka to a duel. If Ruka wins, Juri must return his affection. If Juri wins, he must stop messing with Shiori and leave the campus.
Ruka leaves the Academy so we assume Juri won the duel, or he's just doing it 'cos he loves her. I forgot I'll have to watch it again. I like to assume that Juri won because she kicks butt.
Those are pretty much all the events in the 39 episodes that involve Juri. All are gut-wrenchingly sad and adventerous. After all the story is about Utena. I'm glad this isn't an Utena shrines or I'd have to write lots more and you'd have to read it.
The end.
